I sailed at Rutland for quite a few years. It's a superb sailing ground and the racing at RSC was very competitive. I sailed a Hunter Formula One when I was there but I do recall Devon Yawls in the club. I cadged a ride on one once. It was then I decided that if ever I had a day boat the yawl was for me.

The reservoir has two legs so a course with a mark at the end of each leg and one at the dam can be just over 28 miles. OOD's didn't usually set such long courses.

Stamford is nearby with plenty of guest houses and hotels plus there are plenty more out in the country. Do beware, one of the most expensive hotels in Britain is on the shore of Rutland Water. If you are sailing from the Whtewell site then Oakhan is very close. It's a very pretty town (once county town of Rutland) and well worth a visit.

If you do go I hope you enjoy it as much as I did during my time there.

Ted

Your point taken,Ted and thanks. You'll be the first to know but there's more than a bit of thought to go into our 2011 family holiday plans before the question of a Devon Yawl event at Rutland can be put firmly on the agenda.

I know it's off the subject but I had a stunning sail today in Chi Harbour: ESE wind F4 occ 5, singlehanded, 2reefs in main, mizzen, small jib - just perfect. Hope other members were able to enjoy it too.

Regards

Brian

Hi Brian. Fair enough. However, just a thought... with only one Newsletter a year, the only piece of communication that every member gets, as all are not sign up to the website, if you miss the one now due out, the next Newletter, probably out in June, will not be in time to promote such an event with any chance of success with a good take up. Best. Ted

Ted
Thanks for the advice, but at present I'm just trying to find out more about sailing at Rutland Water - facilities etc. and my thoughts about an event were just to trail the idea and to get some reaction as well as advice. I think there's plenty of time to get something together for next year if indeed we pursue what is, at present, an interesting idea.
Rgards
brian

Hi Brian. I think to get a response you will need to drive this, and maybe even email various members direct using the latest Mem List due out very soon. Also the Newsletter is I guess imminent so again you will need to get something to Chris Batt very soon promoting the event and seeking those interested. Last but not least, as mentioned earlier, contact Derek Gouldsworthy as he organised the last Rutland event a couple of years back and can no doubt give you some tips. Ted

Ted

Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll wait to see if any more responses are forthcoming before I do any follow ups, but if there's any interest in a get together perhaps a note could appear in the newsletter.

Earlier this summer I joined the Bosham Sailing Club event for yawls based in Chichester Harbour with two grandchildren and had an excellent day trailing the fleet round the course and joining in the event supper at BSC. Sandy Woodward did a grand job for us all and perhaps Rutland could be a suitable venue for something similar.

Regards

Brian
